LG G4 With Curved Display To Be Launched Late April

LG will reportedly launch its eagerly anticipated G series flagship smartphone, the LG G4, by the end of next month, to take on the company's biggest market rival Samsung, which is set to roll out its new Galaxy high-end devices starting the 10th of next month.

Citing unidentified sources, the Korean media reports that the LG G4 is likely to feature a curved display with Quad HD resolution like the G3, with a 5in screen.

Analysts believe that the G4 smartphone might become a "gamechanger for LG".

A research note from Kiwoom Securities said: "LG Electronics will take the upper ground in the second-tier battle. The LG G4 will sell 15 million units annually and add to the brand value of LG."

The sales figure for the G4 is expected to be much higher than the G3, which sold about seven million units since its launch in April last year.

"Despite the strong sales of the iPhone 6 and high expectations for the Galaxy S6, the sales of the G4 will be higher than the G3. We expect the sales of the G4 will reach 9.2 million units for 2015," according to the Korea Investment & Securities Co.

The company had previously confirmed that it aims to sell 10 million G4 units this year.

"LG Electronics aims to achieve the 10 million sales target of the G4 smartphone, which will be unveiled next month. Specifications of the G4 and changes we've made had been briefed to top outlet channels and European carriers during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) fair. Initial response was good enough," an LG official said at the fair.

Assuming this roll out runs on the same timeline as other Google roll outs, about 1% of LG G Pad 8.3 GPe users should see the update in the first 48 hours, and the stages will progress at about 25% of devices over one or two weeks, until it's all done.

There is also no full change log available to let us know about any device specific tweaks, but the update notification mentions the usual Android 5.0 features, like "a bold new visual style", lock screen notifications, battery saving mode, Priority Mode, and Smart Lock.

Just over a week after LG said that it currently has no plans to update the G3 to Android 5.1 Lollipop, the company has given a similar heads-up about the G4 Android 5.1.1 update.

While no additional details were provided, it could be that the company may just be planning a jump straight to Android M for its latest flagship, too.

Meanwhile, Samsung's latest Galaxy S6 duo flagships have started receiving the Android 5.1.1 update - it is currently rolling out to T-Mobile and US Cellular units in the US. In addition, the S6 is getting it in France, while the S6 Edge is getting it in the UK.

Android Lollipop Now Available For Nexus 4

Now Nexus 4 owners can update their stock Android handset to Android 5.0, by navigating their phone to the system update options.

The update weighs in at about 400MB, and you should find a nice, strong Wi-Fi connection before downloading and installing Android 5.0. By the same token, you should make sure that your battery is charged to at least 50% before you start the process.

The update is being sent out on a staggered basis, so if Android 5.0 hasn't hit your Nexus 4 yet, don't jump.

Just be a little patient, and before you know it, the latest build of Google's open source OS will be powering your phone.

You must have 500MB of free memory in order to install the update, and of course, rooted phones cannot download or install it unless a clean, stock version of Android is flashed.

Pure Google devices that are getting the Android 5.0 treatment include Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 10, and Nexus 7 (2012). Factory images of the new OS version are already available to download and flash.

LG Nexus 4 will also receive the new Android build, though it is yet to to receive a Lollipop factory image.

LG promises bending, rollable, foldable screens

In 2013 we saw the first two devices to come with curved screens, theLG G Flex and the Samsung Galaxy Round.

Those served as a showcase of what was then possible in terms of display technology, but as you'd expect things won't remain that way in the future.

The mobile world moves at a breakneck pace, and so too will the display tech in the years to come. At least if LG Display's newest roadmap pans out.

The screen-making arm of LG wants to use P-OLED technology to create bending, foldable, and rollable displays by 2017. P-OLED uses a plastic substrate unlike other OLED implementations that use glass.

LG says P-OLED results in simpler, thinner, and lighter screens compared to glass OLED as well as LCD. It also makes for panels that are a lot less prone to breaking.

And the company is clearly excited about P-OLED and its potential "to play an important role in people’s everyday lives in the future". Speaking of which, the LG G Flex will apparently be followed up next year by a smartphone with a screen that you'll actually be able to bend.

And then, sometime in 2017 (or later - keep in mind that release time frames for stuff like this usually get delayed), we should see foldable displays for laptops and rollable ones for tablets and TVs.

Before that, the P-OLED tech should make its debut in 'normal' tablets, probably in late 2015 or 2016.

Android M, When Will I Receive It?

Android M has been officially presented at Google I/O, but the question remains - when will your smartphone get the update to Android M? Read when devices from Samsung, Sony, Google and more will get the latest Android update.

Is Your device there ?

HTC Android M update

HTC has already announced that the HTC One models M9 and M9 + will get the Android M update. It isn't clear yet when other devices, such as the HTC One (M8), will get it too.

Samsung Android M update

Samsung has not yet commented on its update schedule, but we can assume that both the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and Galaxy Note 4 will get the Android M update. We've contacted Samsung and are awaiting a response on their Android M update plans.

Sony Android M update

Sony has remained silent on its update schedule, but the Xperia Z3, Z3+, Z4 and Xperia tablet will almost certainly receive the update to Android M.

LG Android M update

Although there is no official word from LG, the LG G4 and the LG G3 will almost certainly receive Android M. We've send LG a request for comment regarding its update plans. We will give you details when we get a response.

Motorola Android M update

Motorola's smartphones usually get updates quickly. That means the Moto X (2014) should be one of the first smartphones to get the Android M update. But models like the Moto G (2014), and also the new Moto E, will also get the update.

Motorola told that it hasn't received source code from Google yet. Once Motorola gets the source code, it'll prepare Android M for its smartphones. However, we don't yet have a timetable and list of devices which will get Android M.

Huawei Android M update

Huawei might see Android M as something sinister - that's because it must first roll out Android Lollipop to its latest smartphones. Only after that can Huawei tackle the update to Android M. Meanwhile, we have received details from Huawei: the P8 will be the first device to get the Android M update. However, Huawei has not given an exact date for when this will occur.

LG rolling out Android 5.0 to the G3 starting this week

LG has announced that its flagship G3 will start receiving an Android 5.0 Lollipop update this week, beginning with users in Poland. Naturally LG is staying clear of giving exact rollout dates for other regions, saying that "key markets" will get the update in "the near future." Of course that doesn't mean it's coming right away to G3 users around the world, but you have to think that if its ready to go for one model this week it's not far from hitting other devices, too.
As for specific new features and the rollout to other LG devices, things aren't so clear either. Based on the current information from LG it sounds like we're just waiting for it to actually hit phones before we'll know what LG has done with the latest software.
It'll be worth keeping an eye on the LG G3 forums for future bits of information as the software hits the wild.

LG G2 to Receive An Update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

Even though it is getting long in the tooth by flagship smartphone standards, LG G2 looks set to receive an update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. The news has reportedly been confirmed by an LG employee from Korea.

Android 5.1.1 Lollipop will reportedly bring LG’s UX 4.0 interface to the G2, as well as a number of other software tricks that are currently available on the LG G4. The device will unsurprisingly skip Android 5.1 and jump straight to Android 5.1.1.

An employee of LG software development department was reportedly able to confirm to AndroidPit that an update to Android 5.1.1 — the absolute latest version of Android available  is already in the making and will soon be headed to the LG G2.

The update is said to bring more than just a bigger firmware number, with the G2 receiving many of the same software features as found on the LG G4 thanks to an updated LG UX 4.0, the company’s custom Android user interface.

Development of the new firmware for the D802 is currently in progress. It should arrive on the smartphone within the next couple of months.

LG Preparing LG-G4 and a whole new Flagship Line

LG has been showing off a few phones at MWC this year, but the top-end LG G4 hasn't been spotted. According to the company's mobile chief Cho Juno, the handset is going to be "radically different" to anything that's come before - both inside and outside.

The Korea Times reports a MWC interview with Juno in which he describes a phone that's a leap forward from the G3. It will feature a metal rather than polycarbonate casing, a major overhaul of its software design, and an improved user experience to boot.

It is expectd to see the LG G4 at some point over the next couple of months.
New chips and flagships

Confirmed that LG is working on a new high-performance mobile processor, one that may even appear in the LG G4.

"Producing our own mobile application chips is very important," he said. "As LG Electronics has been consistent in developing these, we plan to gradually incorporate them into our new models."

And there's word on those "new models" too.According to Juno, LG is busy on a new flagship line even more powerful than the G series - a new tier of high-performance handsets ready to be unleashed in the second half of 2015.

The LG G line is already very powerful, and Juno didn't specify exactly how the new series would be differentiated, but he very clearly stated that it would be something that "stands above" the company's existing phones. With that in mind, don't let LG's quiet MWC fool you - it has big plans in store.

LG officially launches the Optimus 3D, to go on sale in Europe first

After announcing it months back in January, LG has finally launched the Optimus 3D, their first 3D Android handset and what LG calls the world’s first tri-dual architecture smartphone.
The Optimus 3D uses dual-core processor, dual-channel memory and dual memory, which gives it the aforementioned title. The dual-core part has become common now among most new high-end smartphones but the Optimus 3D is the fist to use dual channel and hence dual memory, which LG thinks makes it better and we must say we agree with them. Dual channel memory is indeed better and will definitely produce noticeable improvement in performance in certain applications.
Another feather in Optimus 3D’s cap is the 4.3-inch WVGA 3D display that does not require any kind of glasses. The phone can also record 1080p videos at 24fps and 720p videos at 30fps, all in 3D through the dual 5 megapixel lenses on the back.
The Optimus 3D runs on a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP4430 processor with Cortex A9 CPU and PowerVR SGX540 GPU. It has 512MB RAM (2 x 256MB) and 8GB internal memory, which can be extended via microSD cards. Unfortunately, just like the Optimus 2x, the Optimus 3D is running on Android 2.2 Froyo.
